Waco KO's Corsicana in the Second Half (4A-Div II)
By Henry Witt, III -
After the first quarter of the Corsicana/Waco game, the
Rocky theme song should have been playing over the PA
system of Corsicana's new Tiger stadium. Corsicana hoped
to avenge a 34-10 defeat in week three that they took at
the hands of the Waco High Lions. The scrappy Tigers
gave 9th ranked Waco all they had in the first half, as
the Lions struggled to handle their onslaught and found
themselves overwhelmed, down 14-10 at the end of the
first.
Corsicana QB Bobby Scott hooked up with WR Omarius Hines
4 times for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns in the first
quarter alone. Down by two touchdowns in the first
quarter, Lion running backs B.K. Dugas and Charles
Silmon (who was taking the place of top rusher Jarred
Salubi sidelined with an ankle injury) put the comeback
load on their shoulders. The two combined for 238
rushing yards with four touchdowns on the night, and
would be key in regaining the momentum and the lead for
Waco as they went in at halftime 24-17.
But Corsicana could not keep up with the pace of Waco's
running attack. After the first half slap-in-the-face,
the Lions woke up and started pouring it on. Waco got
the ball to begin the second half, and Dugas and Silmon
drove down on 9 straight rushing plays to the Corsicana
6-yard line, where the drive stalled. The Lions settled
for a field goal, going up by 10.
Then
the Lion defense stepped it up to caused a fumble and
recovered it on the Corsicana 15-yard line. Waco High
continued to pound it out on the ground with 6 more
rushing plays, ending with Silmon going in from one yard
out and putting the Lions up 34-7.
And the Lion defense clamped down on the Tigers in the
second half. A sure sign of Waco flexing their defensive
muscles is evident when considering Hines' stats. Hines
finished the night with 6 catches for 124 yards, even
though he had 4 catches for 120 yards in the Tiger's
fiery first quarter. The fact that they would hold
Corsicana scoreless in the second half only enforces
that assessment.
The
growing lead would weigh on the will of the Tigers in
the latter stages, as they could have been compared to a
tired heavyweight prize fighter that punched himself out
in the early rounds. Corsicana would not recover and
their hopes for revenge will have to wait until next
season, as Waco beats them for the second time this
year, 41-17.
Everything seems to be going in Waco's favor as they won
a coin toss and opportunity to play at home in the
second round of the playoffs. Waco will meet a talented
Dallas Hillcrest bunch on Friday at 2:00 in the
afternoon this Friday.
Marlin Sets Pace for Third Part of Season (2A-DII)
By Dustin Hicks -
The
Marlin Bulldogs know that the most important part of the
season is upon them, and it was apparent that anything
less than a championship season in 2006 would be
unfulfilling.
These teams traded scores when Antonio Moore caught a td
pass from Charles Hitchens to put into books the first
score of the 2006 playoffs. It wasn't until the 2nd
quarter that McGregor would answer that trade when
Junior quarterback Joseph Steward hit Riffelle Owens for
a 25-yard touchdown of his own. On the ensuing kickoff,
LaDamion Hartsfield returned the ball 72 yards for 6
leaving three seconds on the clock. With a close first
half, McGregor kept knocking on the door of an upset in
their first playoff appearance in two years until Marlin
pulled away ending the McGregor Bulldogs hopes of
advancing.
It
wasn't until the middle of the 3rd quarter when Hitchens
hooked up with Antonio Moore for a 20 yard TD reception,
that Marlin could breathe a sigh of relief seeing their
team click.
Swarming the McGregor offense, the Marlin defense shut
down McGregor, not allowing a score in the 2nd half of
play. Travis Miller then had two rushing touchdowns
later in the 4th quarter to put this one to bed.
Rebounding from a tough home loss to #1 ranked Mart, you
could tell that the playoff atmosphere helped Marlin
because they took care of McGregor in business-like
fashion. Marlin will play Newton next week at 2:00 in
Conroe.
Rockets and Hippos run Wild On Each Other (3A-DI)
By Dustin Hicks -
Wildcat
Stadium in Temple served two purposes Friday night,
doubling as a football field and a tread mill. The
Hippos and Rockets racked up over 600 yards rushing
combined, but the white and blue were able to put theirs
to better use, beating the 2005 state finalist 49-27.
Robinson fans are used to big games by their QB Randy
Kitchens and this was no different. As usual he made big
plays, with touchdown runs from 20 and 54 yards. He was
responsible for 450 of the 670 total yards cashed in by
Brian Lewis' squad.
Going up 14 to nothing at the end of the first,
Rocketbackers still wouldn't have thought that this
would be a high scoring affair against a team that was
the runner up in the land just a year ago. But both
teams traded score for score in the 2nd quarter making
50 points scored combined in the first half. The
beginning of the 2nd half didn't work out as planned,
unless both teams didn't want to score and start this
thing out to be a defensive battle.
Then,
Hutto broke the monotony when Jeremy Kerley snapped off
a 46-yard TD run. Kitchens answered one minute later by
doing what he does best, creating opportunities for his
teammates with his ability to run, when he hit B.J Lewis
for a 80+ td pass. Robinson put the Hippos to rest in
the 4th when Kitchens did the only scoring in the 4th
tossing two td passes to Blake Vincent and B.J. Lewis.
Robinson moves on while Hutto dreams about getting one
win further than they did last year come to an end.
Robinson moves on to play Palestine next week Friday at
Floyd Casey.
Mart Speeds Past Hamilton and Into Round Two (2A-DII)
By Henry Witt, III
- When talking to Rusty Nail before the Mart Panthers'
game Friday night versus Hamilton, he gave us the
impression that he intended to exploit Hamilton's
susceptible defensive secondary.
And he did just that. The
Panthers pounced on the Bulldogs from the outset,
scoring on five of their six first half possessions and
going up 35-0 at the half. Mart's Damian Davis very
nearly ran back the first punt of the game, after the
Panther "D" held Hamilton to 3 and out on their opening
possession. He would go on to grab 3 touchdown
receptions on the night, hauling in 150 yards receiving.
Mart QB Lee McClendon threw six touchdown passes and was
10/13 passing for 203 yards.
Hamilton simply lacked
defensive speed as the Mart receiving crew blew past the
Bulldog secondary, leaving Hamilton to rely on their
"three-yards and a cloud of dust" offense to try and
outscore the Panthers. But the Purple Pain defensive
unit would slam the door on that line of thinking very
quickly. Hamilton could barely move the ball until the
end of the fourth quarter when they rumbled into the end
zone for their only two scores of the contest.
Mart earns the chance to
play East Chambers in the second round of the playoffs
as they upended Hemphill in a close game of the first
round by a score of 34-29.
If tonight's 49-14 win
over Hamilton is any indication of what the Panthers
plan to do for the remainder of the post season, there
may not be a team in the Texas 2A Division II state
championship brackets that can contend with them.

Game Summaries
Mart's Dog Catching Defense Secures
22-2A Title
By
Dustin Hicks - “There is no more talking to
be done about this game. Everything that needs to be
said has already been said, and now we just gotta go do
it.” This was told to us by Marlin’s Offensive
Coordinator Kevin Morton before the game dubbed "The
Battle of the Purple and Golds" was about to begin. The
pre-game activities lived up to their billing with the
stands filling up with fans cheering for their team as
they went out for pre-game warm-ups. Light hearted smack
talk to opposing players when they dropped a ball, or
booing of the refs as they walked the field for their
pre-game ritual was all fun and games. If you didn’t
like to hear smack talk then you should’ve watched
another game because passionate teams breed passionate
fans. In an attempt to tame those fans, there was a
visible increase in security that included Marlin
police, Mart police, constables, The Falls County
Sheriffs Department, and Mart Animal Control.
Mart Animal Control? Yes,
they were the most forceful bunch, as they shut down the
Marlin Bulldogs in the first half with ease. Head dog
catcher Mark Reynolds lead his defense to a nearly
perfect performance shutting down Marlin’s running
attack that accumulated negative yards on it’s first few
series. Marlin hardly took any snaps on the Mart side
of the field. They were rounding them up left and
right, not letting the usually potent Marlin offensive
get in any type of rhythm.
Big plays with big wind
behind the Panther offense helped them jump to a 13-0
lead by the end of the first. Then Marlin tried to use
the wind to their advantage, but failed, throwing ducks
to receivers on misread routes. Coach Malone wanted his
o-line to step up and make some plays to give Charles
Hitchens some time and room to run, but they stood up
and got drove back by the dog catching Panther defense
once again as Marlin was forced to punt.
Mart got the ball back and
McClendon found Damian Davis for a 30 yard pass, but
while trying to squeeze in a few more yards, Davis
fumbled giving Marlin the ball back. It was something
the Dogs couldn’t make good for themselves as Mark
Reynolds was all over Antonio Moore for a 3 yard loss.
Marlin was forced to punt, but Mart Animal Control
Deputy Heston Adler peeped out what looked like a fake
punt run for a big loss. Adler's tackle gave Mart the
field position they needed to punch in another score,
when Arthur Truitt took the handoff on a sweep and ran
it in for a touchdown from 6 yards out. Mart’s 19-0 lead
had an effect on Bulldog players as they seemed
frustrated. They would stay that way the rest of the
night as Mart dominated them the rest of the game.
The game itself did not live up to it’s
billing. Mart broke Marlin’s 9 year district winning
streak in the district championship game. The teams were
evenly match on almost every level, but the Mart
football instincts were just a little sharper on this
night.
Battle Tested Waco Slams
Cove (16-4A)
By Henry Witt, III -
Some Waco High fans question head coach Johnny Tusa's
tedious preseason schedule strategy, but their strong
play in district 16-4A can be attributed to that tactic.
After suffering back to back preseason losses to highly
touted 5A teams Euless Trinity and Tyler Lee, Waco High
used those experiences to their advantage, entering
their week 10 contest with Copperas Cove undefeated in
district play. Despite Waco's convincing wins of late,
Copperas Cove was thought by many to be the favorite in
this game, as they too were without a district loss when
the ball was kicked off tonight in their home stadium.
Waco and
Copperas Cove have two of the strongest defensive units
in Texas 4A football, and neither intended to give an
inch in this game that would decide the 16-4A district
championship. The defensive battle was on from the
outset. Waco got the ball first, but when they were
forced to punt to Cove, the return was fumbled by
Bulldog Donelle Greer and recovered by Waco's Andrew
Weaver. Cove would not let Waco capitalize so easily as
they recorded several tackles for losses, and forced
Waco to put on their next two possessions.
But at
the end of the first quarter, Waco's offense sprang to
life as Jared Salubi eluded the Bulldog defense on a
23-yard run, and B.K. Dugas matched that with a 24-yard
run of his own to put the Lions on the Cove 10-yard
line. The Dawg defense was obviously keying on Salubi
for most of the game. And that was never more evident
than when the Cove secondary came up on a play-action
fake, allowing QB Bryan Smith to hit a wide open B.K.
Dugas in the end zone for the first score of the game.
Waco went
in at the half with a 7-0 lead, but in the third quarter
the strong north wind came into play when a Waco punt
gave Copperas Cove great field position on their own 49.
The Bulldogs drove down the field and capped the drive
off as RB Jerrard Millsap launched himself into the end
zone over the pile of humanity that culminated on the
goal line, knotting the score at 7-7. Waco High got the
ball back on their own 2 yard line, and mounted a
98-yard drive while eating time off the clock. The Lions
finished the drive in leaping fashion, with 7 minutes
left in regulation, as Ronald Horne out-jumped Cove
defenders to haul in a 22-yard TD pass from Smith. That
score put the Lions up by a TD 14-7, and was set up by
the same play action fake that Cove struggled with in
the first quarter.
On the
following possession Cove got back into Waco territory,
but rolled the dice and came up with snake eyes on an
unsuccessful fake punt on 4th and 5. Cove held and got
one more chance to drive the field from their own 24,
but that chance was cut short when a shotgun snap sailed
over QB Robert Griffin's head and rolled into the end
zone, where Waco linebacker Reggie Young nailed Cove's
coffin shut by jumping on the ball and scoring the last
TD of the game.
With
Waco's 21-7 win over Copperas Cove, they will face
15-4A's Corsicana who they played and beat in week 2 by
a score of 34-3. Cove will play 16-4A's Waxahachie next
Friday at 7:30pm in WISD Stadium.
LaVega
Football Redeems Itself (17-3A)
By Henry Witt, III -
Two years ago, the LaVega Pirates uncharacteristically
went 0-10 on the season, leaving many to wonder how on
earth Willie Williams could turn the program around. But
many CentexFootball.com fans also know that the LaVega
program traditionally hits seasonal peaks and valleys,
and while 2004 was rock-bottom, 2006 is proving to be
Mount Everest. Weak defensive play was the Pirates fatal
flaw in 2004 and it has been obvious that defense has
been a focal point of the Pirates' polishing in 2005 and
2006.
The
battle between two rival teams in LaVega and Connally
would force the Cadets to go all out or go home, as they
faced a "live or die" situation in a tight 17-3A playoff
race. Connally could do anything but move the ball in
the first half as the Pirate defense was pummeling them.
Out of eight first half drives for the Cadets, six of
them were three-and-out. And LaVega's offense took
advantage of those opportunities going up 21-0 at the
half. They scored again at the beginning of the 2nd
half, with Connally only being able to score on LaVega's
2nd team defense in the fourth quarter. With this 28-7
victory, LaVega is going to play in post-season and
Connally is going to play basketball.

#1 Mart #2 Marlin
Battle for 22-2A Crown |
|
By Dustin Hicks CentexFootball.com VP of Operations |
|
November 8,
2006 |
|

If it
wasn’t for head coach Jerry Malone, the Marlin Bulldogs
would not be where they are today. They wouldn’t be
riding a 9 season undefeated district win streak. They
wouldn’t have any hopes of winning a state title every
year. They wouldn’t be a disciplined well rounded speedy
football team that competes year after year even after
loosing many players each fall to D1 schools.
“If it
wasn’t for Coach Malone, I wouldn’t be where I am today”
says Mart head coach Rusty Nail. “He was key in making
me the coach I am now.” Nail was an assistant coach
under Malone for 3 years, while at Marlin he made his
home in Mart. “I didn’t have to be a head coach to be
happy, but when the Mart job came open I threw my name
in the hat.” said Nail.
The
respect factor is off the charts when it comes to Malone
and Nail, and it is also sky high on the bulletin board
when Marlin and Mart players talk about their respected
teams. There is no trash talk, there is no name calling,
and there is no true material that each team can post on
the wall in their locker room to make this game
personal. All you see is both towns’ fans talking about
how great a game this will be. You will see how anxious
they have been for this night to come. It has a “may the
best man win” aura in the air.
It is
the same way with the fans. Before the game begins you
will see friendly socializing among both team’s fans.
Tailgaters will most likely be in full force, and as
long as you got your purple and gold on, you will be
considered family.
But
both towns take their pigskin serious. Real serious, so
when that ball is kicked off 7:30 this Friday night at
Legion Field, it will be an all out war between the
Purple and Golds. Both teams match up pretty well.
Marlin has bigger size both in numbers and actual player
size. Speed, speed, speed. Both teams bring their
traditional speed and quickness to the game, with Marlin
getting the upper hand with the overall team speed.
The
records, speed, size, and coaching will not have a
factor in this as much as when the football instinct
kicks in and the adrenalin tapers down. Both of the
team’s players have been playing “throw em up, beat em
up” style of football with a crushed milk carton they
got from lunch time, playing on gravel streets and
cul-de-sacs since they were old enough to play outside
by themselves. . Getting a quick game in on that
neighbor’s yard that actually had grass on it before
they noticed you was taking a real chance without
getting yelled at or getting a switch brought after
you. That’s what small town football is all about.
It was
like a dream come true for Mart fans in need of a new
head coach after the firing of then head coach Tommy
Roberson. Mart fans felt like they were under achieving
as a team, but most feel they are right on track being
ranked #1 in the 2A polls. A revived community has a new
sense of pride with Nail as their captain, but Nail says
“coaching can’t win you games, only players can do
that.” and both teams have their fair share of great
players past and present. It will be a game between two
great teams, two great coaches and most importantly two
great towns.

Midway Breaks Losing Streak
vs. Trojans - University @ Midway (16-4A)
By Dustin Hicks - Even
a seven game winning streak against Midway couldn’t help
University pull off a miracle to make it last one more
year. Midway could do anything offensively in the first
half against the out played Trojan defense as it took
only four plays to get the first of many scores for the
Panther O. Jared Ray’s 30-yard pass to Matt Davis put
the score at 7-0 with only three minutes gone in the
first quarter. Despite bad field position on the
ensuing kickoff, University was able to manage a decent
drive to the middle of the field before having to out
the ball. Midway then used only five plays to reach pay
dirt again, when Ray hit Davis for a second time with a
36-yard touchdown reception. With a 14-0 score
University fought back a bit, as they mounted another
decent drive from their own 14 to get into the red
zone. Facing fourth down, and what could have been a
momentum changing play, University QB Randy Price threw
an interception to Germaine Gilbert and returned it 14
yards. The momentum swung back to Midway when Ray found
Robbie Mendoza for a long gainer to get the Panthers to
the Trojan 22. Three plays later Ray was sacked by
Darrell Ervin for a loss, which made the Panthers bring
in the field goal unit as they kicked a long 37-yard
field goal with 4 minutes to go in the half. Midway had
a bad kick go their way on the ensuing kickoff when the
ball was mishandled by University and recovered by
Midway on the Trojan 20. Ray then hit (who else, but
his go to guy) Davis with a 23-yard TD pass.
University’s only score came when Antonio Neal slipped
passed defenders en route to a 74-yard TD reception. The
feeling we get from the Trojans is that they want this
disappointing season to be over and done. Hopefully some
changes can be made to make University a competitor next
year.
Rockets Blast Into Playoffs - Robinson @
Gatesville (17-3A)
By Henry Witt, III -
In the beginning of the game the Gatesville
Hornets looked as if they might put up a fight against
the Robinson Rockets. On the opening drive, Gatesville
drove down the field with ease and capped it off with a
4-yard Matt Chartier run up the middle to give the
Hornets their only lead of the game. Robinson QB Randy
Kitchens threw and interception on the Rockets'
following possession, but that flaw would not prove to
be fatal as the Hornet offense stalled and punted back
to Robinson. In the second quarter, the Rockets answered
the Hornets' early touchdown with an 8-yard TD scamper
by Kitchens. And Robinson would not stop answering for
the rest of the night as they poured on 7 consecutive
touchdowns on the helpless Hornet defense. Kitchens more
than made up for his first quarter miscue as he finished
the night with a game high 115 yards rushing, while
passing for 139 yards. Kitchens also carried the biggest
stick on the Robinson offense, scoring 3 touchdowns on
the ground and passing for another. His only TD pass
came in the second quarter on a 36-yard connection with
Austin Cleere. Gatesville showed signs of life late in
the game, scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter,
the last of which came on a 65-yard TD run by Davelle
Marshall with 10 seconds left in regulation. But the
effort would barely scratch the surface of the hefty
Rocket lead as the Rockets would take the "W" by a final
score of 42-20. The outcome of this and other week 9
games forces Gatesville into a three-way tie for the 3rd
playoff spot in district 17-3A, while the Rockets have
ensured their own appearance in post-season play.
#1 Mart's Defense Wrecks Shop - Teague @ Mart
(22-2A)
By Dustin Hicks -
The Teague Lions never knew what hit them. I personally
don’t know why Coach Kevin Hayes and his players had
such shocked looks on their faces when they had to have
seen game film of what was coming at them Friday night
at Chambless field in Mart. Coming into the game, the
Lions carried cockiness after getting only a moral
victory coming so close to beating Marlin the previous
week. That chip would soon get knocked right out of
their shoulder pads, as did all aspirations of pulling
off an upset over the #1 ranked Panthers. Mart jumped
all over the Lions, going up 21-0 before the end of the
1st quarter. The first series for Teague’s
“ball control offense” was introduced to Mart’s “not in
my house” defense as the Lions went three and out. On
that particular series, the Lions lost double-digit
yards after Landon Summers and Mark Reynolds showed why
Super Centex honors may be coming their way by sacking
Quentin Coleman back to back times. After another Mart
score by Lee McClendon, Teague got the ball back and the
same “ball control” offense controlled another 3 and
out, resulting in a punt. The Panthers got good field
position and McClendon then scored his 2nd
touchdown of the game on a scramble from 5 yards out.
McClendon finished up with 3 TD’s on 110 yards rushing,
and 150 yards passing compared to Teague QB Quentin
Coleman’s uninspiring performance of ZERO yards passing
and 11 yards rushing. Mart's defense completely shut
down the usually high-powered Teague offense as the
Panthers won by a final score of 35-0. Our hats go off
to the Mart coaching staff, because the players were
definitely not looking ahead to the big game with Marlin
next week for the 22-2A crown. They wanted to let Teague
know where their place is in this district, which will
be fighting it out for the bronze.
China Spring Can't Stop the Bleeding - China
Spring @ Connally (17-3A)
By Henry Witt, III -
Many CentexFootball.com Community members questioned
China Spring's ability to win after losing star wide
receiver Mike Hicks earlier in the season to an ACL
injury. This past Friday, it was evident that without
Hicks, China Spring's lackluster offense cannot make up
for their consistently weak defensive play. One week
after Robinson put up 50 points on China Spring, the
Connally Cadets would try take advantage of the wounded
Cougars. And they did just that. Cadet running back
Chris Todd ran all over the Cougar defense, racking up
150 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground. China Spring's
offense looked to the air for answers but struggled to
find them as Cougar QB Dustin Eskew only completed 19 of
44 passes on the night and threw two interceptions. Even
though the Cadets are 3-5 on the season, they are now
2-2 in district play and find themselves in the running
for a possible playoff berth after they downed the
Cougars 37-15. China Spring was undefeated before
falling to Robinson and Connally and are now hanging
onto their playoff hopes by a thread in a three-way
fight for the third 17-3A playoff position.

Week 8 Game Feature Game Summaries
#4 Marlin
Struggles but Takes the Win- LaVega @ Teague (22-2A)
The Marlin Bulldogs were their own worst enemies Friday
night versus district rival Teague. The Bulldogs lost
three fumbles to the Lions throughout the game, two of
which were in the red zone, as Marlin almost dropped
their chances of winning the 22-2A district title. On
the opening drive of the game, Marlin took control
barreling down the field to into the red zone, but the
Lions got the ball on one of Marlin's three fumbles. It
was a defensive battle for the rest of the half with
Craig
Contreras scoring the only points by kicking a 32-yard
field goal to put the Bulldogs up 3-0 at halftime.
Marlin's first drive of the second half started much
like the first one of the game, but this time they
finished it with a Charles Hitchins scamper into the end
zone to extend the Bulldog lead to 10-0. But Teague's
star QB Quintin Coleman wouldn't let a 10-point deficit
get him down. On the following kickoff, Marlin pinned
the Lions on their own 3-yard line. Just a couple of
plays later on third down and 6, Coleman dropped to pass
and was nearly sacked for a safety, but stayed on his
feet and darted through the Marlin defense 96 yards for
a touchdown. This score made it a three point game,
10-7. The Bulldogs answered as Charles Hitchins scored
on a QB sneak set up by a 65 yard run from RB Travis
Miller, who finished the night with 150 rushing yards.
As the game stood at 17-7, Teague found themselves in a
third and two situation on their own 20 yard-line and
decided a little trickery was in order. Coleman rolled
out and tucked the ball to run and as the Bulldog
secondary was drawn to him, he launched an 80-yard pass
to Seth Watson to make the score 17-14. In the final
minutes of the game, the Teague defense held strong and
the Bulldogs got possession back. With .8 seconds left
in the game and Teague on their own 45, Coleman threw a
hail-mary prayer and Dominick Jones sealed the Marlin
victory by intercepting the pass. Jones had two picks on
the night.
Since Teague fell in this one, Marlin and Mart are the
only two undefeated teams left in 22-2A district play.
One thing is certain... Marlin
will have to play much better than they did in this game
if they want to beat Mart and ultimately take the
district 22-2A crown. - Henry

Cove Comes Out Swinging Hard- Midway @ Copperas Cove
(16-4A)
The Bulldogs came out like Butterbean, jumping on
Midway 21-0 in the first quarter and 28-3 in the second
proving why they are one of the elite 4A teams in
Texas. Midway's lack of athleticism proved to be the
killer for Midway not even showing why they were suppose
to be a well rounded team this year. The 3rd quarter
was a slow one for both teams as they struggled to do
anything eventfull except for a 6 yard TD reception by
Todd Glaesmann from Midway signal caller Jared Ray. A
balanced attack by the Panthers tipped the scale the
wrong was when they just couldn't get anything to stay
steady for them all night. The new 4-A powerhouse
showed why they are tops in the state, with their big
play capablity and disciplined players. Midway just
could not do anything with what little opportunities
Cove gave them, getting blown off the ball on both
sides. A 90 yard Cove drive capped off with a 5 yard
run took a bulk of time off the clock and sealed the
win. Midway came with too little too late when Jared Ray
threw a 18 yard pass to Matt Davis. Cove wins 36-16.
- Dustin Hicks
LaVega too much for Gatesville- Gatesville @
LaVega (17-3A)
In a contest
that was much closer than the score might indicate,
LaVega and Gatesville battled to keep their hopes for a
district championship alive. LaVega got the first
possession and put together a 70-yard drive capped off
with a 2-yard Chris Parr (RB) scoring romp up the
middle. LaVega was certainly not without miscues, as an
interference call on the following pooch kick put the
Hornets on the Pirate 40. That set up a 15-yard scoring
pass from Luke Howard to Matt Chartier to tie the game
at 7-7. LaVega's defense shut down Gatesville for the
remainder of the first half, but the Pirates could not
capitalize on it fumbling twice on 4th and goal in the
second quarter. Then it was Gatesville's blunder that
set up a LaVega score. A 15-yard punt gave the Pirates
the ball on the Hornets' 30-yard line, and a 24-yard
Chris Parr (115 rushing yards for the game)
touchdown scamper soon followed. Gatesville was called
offsides on the extra point try and the Pirates elected
to go for two point conversion, and Parr got those two
points putting LaVega up at halftime 15-7. The second
half was scoreless until the fourth quarter within 8
minutes left when LaVega's Larry Carpenter intercepted a
Howard pass and returned it 50-yards for a TD, pulling
the game out of Gatesville's reach. Gatesville had a
chance to score later in the 4th quarter, driving to the
LaVega 30-yard line, but Howard was sacked and the
Hornets could not convert on 4th and 23. LaVega then ran
out the clock to win the game, 22-7.
This game marked the 100th win for Pirate head coach
Willie Willams, and the result of this and other week
eight 17-3A games puts LaVega, Gatesville, China Spring,
and Robinson in a four-way tie for the district lead.
- Henry Witt, III
Robinson "Runs" Away with Hefty Win- Robinson @ China
Spring (17-3A)
Nearly breaking
the 500-yard mark, Robinson's "O" was just too much for
Mark Bell's overpowered Cougar defense. Running the
ball may have not been in the initial game plan, but you
couldn't tell that by the Rocket's 400 yard rushing
attack, with 3 different white and royal jerseys racking
up at least 100 yards a piece. Robinson jumped out
quickly to a "21-0 skunk" lead on an interception off of
Dustin Eskew by Austin Cleere for a Deion Sanders like
run back for a TD. Then there were two 50-plus yard
touchdown runs by Keenan Alford before the 1st period
expired. China Spring only got into Robinson territory
once in the first half when Bobby Martin 27-yard TD
reception made the score 21-6. With a successful onside
kick, the Cougars got the ball back and could have got
some momentum shifted back their way, if not for a
failed halfback pass which then made it 3rd and long.
It seemed to go all down hill from there in the second
half with Kitchens commanding his offense to have no
mercy on the absent Cougar defense with a long TD pass
to B.J. Lewis for 60 yards, then calling his own number
for a 10 yard TD scamper. Like a dying snake, the
Cougars started to show signs of life late and scored 20
points on the Rockets second team defense, but it wasn't
nearly enough as they lose 50-26. The Cougar faithful
were not the only people disappointed with this larger
than expected Cougar loss. We have to admit, the
CentexFootball.com staff was too, since we had them
ranked in our pound for pound poll for several weeks.
But that just goes to show that when district rolls
around you never can tell what's going to happen,
especially in this cut-throat district.

Waco's Defense
Sees Red... AGAIN! - Killeen @ Waco (16-4A)
Red is the
color of fear. Red is the color of blood. Red is the
color that swarmed all over the Killeen Kangaroos Friday
night. As usual, Tusa's boys showed why they are
perennially one of the best defenses in the area. You
could see fear in the eyes of the Roo's, and I would bet
the house that some blood was exposed when the hard
hitting, smash mouth, gang tackling Lion defense flew to
the ball like someone was talking about their momma.
Wearing the traditional red helmet, red jersey and red
pants the Waco defense shut out the Roo's 41-0, which
made it easy for Waco's offense to score time and time
again. Waco's offense lost two fumbles in the first
half, but that didn't seem to matter because the Roo's
couldn't find any room to work with their backs against
their own end zone. B.K. Dugas, who finished the night
with 70 rushing yards, showed power and elusiveness by
finding pay dirt twice on the ground and once through
the air on a 5-yard reception. Jarred Salubi added two
rushing TD's and 120 yards from his running attack. The
defense also received some black and white striped
recognition on a Reggie Young 30-yard fumble return into
the end zone. - Dustin Hicks
Battle of Unbeatens Lives Up to the Hype- Crawford @
Hamilton (21-2A)
In a clash that had me and Dustin Hicks at odds
as to the predicted outcome, the undefeated duo of the
Crawford Pirates and the Hamilton Bulldogs did battle in
what was most likely the deciding factor of who is to be
the district 21-2A title holder in 2006. Bulldog
standout Justin Bell ran for 143 yards on the night, but
his passing game could not compliment his running attack
as he was intercepted 3 times through out the game.
Crawford RB Brock Duncan topped Bell in the rushing
category with 150 yards on the ground. Crawford QB Brett
Duncan threw for 156 yards and a touchdown. It was
a nail-biter with the game tied 14-14 at one point. But
Hamilton was just outplayed in this one on plays
including a 65-yard TD pass from Brett Duncan to Travis
Slaughter for and and Kenny Davis returned interception
for a score. Crawford takes this one to command the lead
of 21-2A by a score of 35-21. -
Henry Witt, III
Outplayed Trojans
Can't Defend Home Field- Salado@Troy (25-2A)
Every fan was on their feet in Troy as the Salado
Eagles stay tied for district lead. Salado was down by
a point heading into the final quarter before a trick
play put them ahead. Seth Collins took the hook and
lateral pass from Stephen Quick early in the final
quarter that put them ahead 22-15. The ensuing kickoff
put Troy in horrible field position, but good play
execution gave Jeremy Conrad running room as he gained
16 yards before being brought down by Trojan defenders.
Bad play execution made Troy punt the ball on their own
30. The Eagles returned the favor by forcing the
Trojans to a 4th and 5 decision of whether to go for it
or punt. They did both by trying a predictable fake
punt that was stopped just inches from the first down
marker. Trojans lose to Salado 29-21.

Coaches take to Webbed Football
-CentexFootball.com Recognized in Waco Tribune- |
By Brice Cherry
Waco Tribune-Herald Youth Sports Editor |
|
Friday October
27,
2006 |
This article
appeared on the front page of the sports section in
Waco Tribune Herald
Friday Oct 27th.
Every Friday afternoon at around 6 o’clock, Henry Witt
leaves his day job at Dell Computers in McGregor and
travels to the home of his friend Dustin Hicks in
Hewitt. For the rest of the evening, Witt’s attention is
consumed by a pair of electronic devices — his cell
phone and Hicks’ computer — until roughly 4 a.m., when
he finally crashes.
Witt is the owner and, along
with Hicks, co-founder of Centexfootball.com, one of
hundreds of Internet sites that is transforming the way
high school football information is gathered, packaged
and communicated in the 21st century.
From fan
sites to coaching job boards, from in-depth recruiting
services to fluff-heavy trivia sites, the Web has
entangled the sport with staggering
frequency. In fact, a simple Google search of “Texas
high school football” registered almost 11 million links
in less than a second.
“We use
the Web constantly,” said McGregor coach Tim Seward.
“There are so many different things out there, and it’s
made things a lot easier in a lot of respects. You’ve
got all kind of polls, like the Harris Poll or the
Padilla Poll, you can go onto the Web to find stats or
records. The Texas High School Coaches Association has a
nice press box feature that allows you to find district
records and statistical leaders, things like that. It’s
really allowed coaches to do a little scouting right
from their office.”
It also
gives an amplified voice to the fans, which was Witt’s
objective when he created Centexfootball.com six years
ago. Witt began tinkering around with Web development in
1999 as a senior at Mart High School, eventually
creating a tribute site to the Panther football team.
From
there, the idea expanded out to the entire Central Texas
area, and today the site boasts roughly 11,000
registered users and draws 7,000 page views per day
during the football season, Witt said.
“I never
thought it would be this big,” Witt said. “We had a
pretty limited audience in the beginning. When we first
started, we had 282 users, and Dustin and I were just
jumping up and down, because we thought that was huge.
But it’s definitely grown.”
Like
similar Web sites, Centexfootball.com’s most popular
feature is its bulletin board link, where fans
congregate and chat about local football using screen
names like “teaguelions2003” and “friday night
freestyle.” Internet message boards have seemingly
become the water cooler of the modern world.
Of
course, that conversation can sometimes evolve into
trash talk, particularly among those who hide behind the
cloak of anonymity. To Groesbeck coach Richey Cutrer,
that is the biggest drawback to the marriage of high
school football and the ’Net.
“Back in
the day, it was the anonymous letter,” said Cutrer, who
added that he doesn’t read message boards. “Nowadays,
people go on Web sites or maybe you just create your own
site, and write whatever you want to write under some
fancy screen name ... I think it’s almost a societal
thing, with so many people wanting to focus on the
negative.”
Abbott
coach Terry Crawford does read message boards, in part
to catch up on news at other schools but also to monitor
the activity of his own players. He doesn’t want anyone
associated with the team spouting off any bold claims
that may end up on an opponent’s locker-room bulletin
board.
“I’m on
Sixmanfootball.com multiple times a day,” Crawford said.
“You keep up with the trends, check on the other
districts, but I also want to make sure our people don’t
make any inflammatory comments. People ask, ‘How do you
find out who it was?’ Well, we’re in a pretty small
town. It doesn’t take much to figure it out.”
As he
alluded to, Crawford’s favorite Internet destination is
Sixmanfootball.com, the popular site run by six-man
enthusiast Granger Huntress.
Huntress
had been publishing a six-man football newsletter when
he added an Internet component in 1995. Some 11 years
later, Sixmanfootball.com has 13,691 registered users
and generates more than a million page views per month
during the season.
The site
offers various features, from a description of the
six-man game’s history to fan polls to Huntress’ own
personal rankings of every public and private six-man
team in the state.
And, of
course, the message boards. Like Witt, who utilizes 10
message-board moderators and has plans to add 15 more,
Huntress patrols the various boards and will delete any
foul or slanderous remarks.
Which
happens less than one might think, he said.
“Occasionally I’ll have to delete things if it’s really
offensive language or whatnot,” Huntress said. “But
really I don’t like to censor too much. If someone posts
something attacking a team or a coach, I’d much rather
have other people from that town get on the site and
tell the person they’re an idiot. ... But we have had a
lot more attacks on coaches this year. We’ve had
communities like Coolidge and Oglesby airing their dirty
laundry.”
The
coaches themselves are finding much more effective uses
of the Internet. Hundreds of schools utilize a
stat-compiling service from the Texas High School
Coaches Association (thsca.com), while the coaches also
praise the ease of electronic communication when it
comes to crafting their schedules or even searching for
jobs.
“If
you’re a coach looking to hire somebody, you immediately
go to the job boards and post the qualifications you’re
looking for,” said McGregor’s Seward. “You put out a job
opening anymore, and you’ve got 100 applications before
you know what to do.”
At
Abbott, Crawford doesn’t know what he’d do without the
Web-based program that he uses to compile his team’s
statistics.
“It’s
great,” he said. “We can do our stats on a Palm Pilot on
the sideline now, come back to the office and plug into
the computer and create an HTML file and then send it to
all the different media, and it saves 35 to 40 minutes
of phone calls after a game. Plus, you don’t have to
worry about getting ‘Pustejovsky’ spelled right.”
While
laptop computer playbooks for high school football
players are probably still a few years off, and coaches
aren’t likely to start e-mailing their plays to the
sideline, you can bet that the Internet will continue to
find its uses in and around the fieldhouse.
“We’re
always working on the weekend, so we use the Internet a
lot, because we don’t get to watch those Saturday and
Sunday games,” Seward said. “That’s how we keep up.
You’ve always got a lot of coaches hitting that refresh
button.”

Week 7
Summary
Game of the Week
Pirates Rob
Robinson in the Final Seconds
- LaVega at Robinson (17-3A)
Late in the fourth
quarter with the ball game tied 22-22, overtime seemed
inevitable as Willie Williams' LaVega Pirates drove down
the field and ended up on the Rocket 26 yard-line. In
this situation, with just 27 seconds left in the game
would you play it conservatively and run the clock to
take your chances in overtime? LaVega DID NOT do that.
Instead they connected on a 26-yard Danzel Wilson play
action pass to Dewayne Snell to go up 29-22. Robinson
proved their "never quit" motto was not just a cliché
when they got the ball back on the following kickoff and
returned it to their own 36 yard-line. Robinson wasn't
done yet. After just two pass plays they found
themselves only 12 yards from pay dirt with a mere two
seconds left in the game. On the last play, Rocket QB
Randy Kitchens (who had trouble with his accuracy
throughout the night) overthrew a wide open Austin
Cleere as time expired. LaVega won this 17-3A heart
stopper 29-22, putting them in a 3rd place district tie
with Robinson. China Spring and Gatesville lead the
district with two wins a piece in conference play. -

Waco Destroys All Hopes for Competitive Rivalry -
Waco @ Midway (13-5A)
As we sat in the stands before this game, we got the
feeling that Waco High fans have been waiting for this
match up for a long time, and by the end of the first
quarter you could tell that Midway backers have been
dreading this night even longer. Waco showed dominance
early and often, by running through tackles and
intimidating the blue, red, and white. The Panthers who
usually have a balanced attack were caught slipping on
offense and were physically beaten on defense. In a
game that we hoped would live up to high expectations
since re-alignment was announced in February, nothing
but disappointment was to be had after this good old
fashion woodshed beating. Well guys, where do you want
to start with this one? How about the first score early
in the game that set the tone for the rest of the night
when B.K. Dugas' 11 run capped off Waco's first
possession? On Waco's second possession Bronshae’ Keon
Dugas' 44-yard pass reception from Bryan Smith with 4
minutes left in the 1st quarter added to what would
become a whirlwind of an offensive "here is what we are
going to run and you can't stop it" mentality. The
thought, "This is going to be a long night and I don't
want to play anymore" was driven into the minds of
Panther players by Dugas’ 17 yard touchdown run. Jarred
Salubi's 16 yard break into the end zone brought the
score to 23-0, and the fans started to get their keys
out, ready to go home and see if anything was on TV. Do
you really want me to keep going or is this enough? We
started it we might as well finish it. Waco's defense
showed why they are normally the best in the area by
stopping everything that Bachtel had in his playbook.
Waco's motto from here on out was "have ball, will
score" when Jarred Salubi's 16 yard run turned the game
into a circus with the clowns wearing white helmets and
red and blue costumes. And it kept going until in the
3rd quarter Midway's Justin Cavasos 34-yard run for a
touchdown put the beaten and bruised Panthers on the
scoreboard for the first time in the game. Then, Waco
answered with yet another Dugas touchdown run, this time
from eight yards out. Midway came back with Spencer
Arellano's 9-yard TD reception from Jared Ray, but that
happened with the Lion's second, third, and fourth
teamers playing. Adding insult to injury, Charles Silmon
broke off 92 yards to the end zone late in the 4th
quarter. Wow, thank god that's over. There is no shame
in losing, but after this one, I am sure the Midway
seniors are glad that they won't have to take another
whipping from The High. There will be plenty of ice
going on many a Panther body part on Saturday as they
try to put this embarrassing 65-14 loss behind them.
- Dustin Hicks
An
Ugly Win is Still a Win - China Spring at Lorena (17-3A)
In a game that many fans picked to be a blowout, China
Spring played a game that was anything but pretty. In
week 7, the Cougars were pitted against a Lorena team
that hadn't scored a single point in district play when
the game started. China Spring lost two fumbles in the
game and QB Dustin Eskew was intercepted twice, but
Lorena couldn't take advantage of those Cougar errors.
Eskew threw for over 200 yards and a touchdown on the
night and leading the Cougars to a 20-0 halftime lead.
Lorena won the battle in the second half, outscoring
China 12-7. But the Leopards lost the war by a final
score of 27-12. - Henry Witt, III
McGregor Blown Away by Hamilton - Hamilton at McGregor
(21-2A)
The Hamilton Bulldog pack obliterated their
counterparts from McGregor in a Week 7 game for which we
mistakenly had high hopes. McGregor's defense all but
laid down as Hamilton bullied their way to a 375 rushing
yard total, led by QB Justin Bell. Bell finished the
night with a game high 125 yards rushing and scored 2
touchdowns on the ground. His most memorable run came
early in the third quarter when he broke 60-yards to put
Hamilton within 10 yards of the McGregor end zone.
McGregor simply could not stop the Hamilton running game
as four Hamilton players had at least 10 carries.
Hamilton's 30-7 victory tonight should catch the
attention of fellow district front-runner Crawford. As
well it should since the undefeated Bulldogs will be
Crawford's biggest test yet. Crawford lost to a Troy
team that has struggled since they dropped the Pirates
earlier in the season. Hamilton looked tonight as if
they could win the district 21-2A title convincingly. -
Henry Witt, III
Crawford Sprints Out of the Gates -
Clifton at Crawford
(21-2A)
Within the first 6 minutes of the game, Crawford scored
a trifecta putting up 21 points on a Travis Slaughter TD
run of 14 yards, a Scott Dent returned fumble from 20
yards out for a TD, and a Dent Buster TD reception from
Brett Duncan. Clifton attempted a comeback, scoring two
touchdowns of their own, but Crawford wasn't having any
of that. The Pirates capped off the night when Slaughter
got it done on the other side of the ball. He
intercepted a 4th quarter Cub pass to return it 35 yards
for a touchdown. Crawford rolls in this one 42-18. -
Henry Witt, III
Battle of Unbeatens Ends in No Contest- Bosqueville at
Goldthwaite (13-1A)
Two teams stepped onto Eagle Field in
Goldthwaite undefeated and one team left beaten...
badly. Bosqueville was off to its best start in the 20
year existence of its 11-man program with a 7-0 record.
Bosqueville faithful, who have not been strangers to the
"losing end" in past seasons, watched as their hopes for
the Bulldogs' first district title came to a screeching
halt at the hands of number four state ranked Goldwaite.
The Eagles, who have not lost in 24 straight regular
season games, slammed Bosqueville to the point of
sidelining Bulldog quarterback Daniel Jones with a
concussion. On the other hand, Goldthwaite quarterback
Jefferson Wesson had no problem keeping his head in the
game as he rushed for 2 touchdowns and threw another.
Bosqueville barely put up a fight and took a nasty lump
by a final score of 40-7. After a win like this its very
hard to believe there is any 1A team in the state that
can stand up to the Goldwaite Eagles. - Henry Witt, III
Riesel
Gets Stomped for the Second Straight Week - Riesel at
Mart (22-2A)
The last two weeks haven't
been very good to Robbie Edwards and his Indians after
getting rolled up like a breakfast burrito against
Marlin last week, and playing the same sad song against
Mart's usual tactics this week. The Panther track meet
was alive and well at Chambless field for this
traditional rivalry. Mart racked up 46 points versus the
surprisingly stunned Indians. The Panther defense was
also in town, shutting out the unimpressive Riesel
offense. Mart quarterback Lee McClendon racked up 220
yards of total offense. Four of his passes connected
with Damion Davis in leaping fashion. Davis added 102
receiving yards and a single touchdown. Nat Hopping
showed the diversity of his skills by scoring on offense
with a 20-yard pass from McLendon and a 60-yard
interception for a TD in the 4th quarter. Mart never
looked back in this one, taking the win by a final score
of 46-0. - Dustin Hicks
Troy Looks Weak Against Florence - Troy at Florence
(25-2A)
The Trojans have had a hard time living up to
preseason expectations, and that struggle continued as
they scored only two touchdowns against a Florence team
that isn't exactly known for having a devastating
defensive corps. The rushing attack of Vasta and Miller
combined for a shade under 250 rushing yards with Vasta
being the only one to get into the end zone out of the
two scores. Troy was reduced to a scoreless second half
as Florence found ways to disrupt the Troy offense.
Troy's defense was the savior by keeping the low octane
Florence offense out of the end zone. Troy looks
unimpressive winning 13-0. - Dustin Hicks
Longhorns Can't
Survive Bremond Scare - Axtell at Bremond (25-2A)
Axtell was down to their 3rd string quarterback
Michael Stranacher as injuries haunted the Longhorns
just a week before Halloween, and it was evident in Week
7 after a 42-7 loss to Bremond. Bremond's Rickie
Williams lead the way for the Tigers with 160 yards
rushing, a 60 yard interception for a touchdown, and a
10 yard reception for a score showcasing his all around
grid iron skills before Mike Cadell's squad and the fans
in attendance. Bremond put this one to bed early
leading 28-0 at halftime. This game is just another
display of Axtell's usual inability to come together in
order to salvage a season. They have shown year after
year that they cannot withstand losing a few games early
in the season.

a new and never before implemented feature to the fans
of Centexfootball.com that will keep you informed of
area high school games in real time. Why wait till you get in
the car after the game and listen to a radio host that
has the personality of a .99 cent frozen pizza, just to
get six scores of games you don't care about? Why
wait till midnight to watch local TV sportscasters tell
corny jokes, give partial scores, and stuff 20 minutes
of advertising into a 30 minute program? Why wait
until the next day to get the newspaper to find out how
you team needs to do nest week to get back in playoff
contention?
We feel your need for
info and will satisfy that need by text messaging area
game updates and scores to you as we get them from our
faithful Centexfootball.com fans and staff members.
Just like every feature
Centexfootball.com offers, this service is absolutely
free of charge (other than standard text messaging fees
charged by your mobile carrier) and we here at
Centexfootball.com get absolutely nothing out of this
but the satisfaction of bringing you the most
comprehensive, interactive score reporting in Central
Texas. We pride ourselves in having the best
Friday Night Scoreboard in
the area, and the new text messaging feature will take
its interactivity one step further.
In order to take
advantage of this brand new feature, all you need to do
to sign up is email me
dustin@centexfootball.com with your phone number
including area code and log in name you use to get into
the bulletin board.
This feature cannot work
without the help that we get from people giving us
scores from the game they are attending. So keep up the
good work, and if you haven't been messaging or calling
in updates to us, please do so by using our new score
hotline 254-716-1030.

Centex Mid-Season Madness-
Teams Battle it Out in District Play |

Week 6 Summary
Temple at Belton (13-5A)
The closest game of week 6 came from district 13-5A in a
game between two perennial rivals, Temple and Belton.
Regulation could not contain these two teams as they
were tied 21-21 at the end of the fourth quarter. The
Tigers led until the second half when Temple QB Terrell Jackson made his
talent evident by bringing his team back into the game.
He then ran to the 1 yard line on the first play of OT
to set up the go-ahead Wildcat touchdown. To secure the
win, the Wildcat defense kept Belton out of the end zone
taking the victory before a stunned Belton crowd 28-21.
Shoemaker at Harker Heights (13-5A)
Homecoming
festivities in Harker Heights were capped off in Week 6
with the Knights' second straight 13-5A win over Killeen
Shoemaker. This was a close one all the way through as
the Grey Wolves did everything they could to ensure a
rainy parade. Shoemaker led the game in the 4th quarter
14-13, but in the middle of the fourth, Heights QB Eain
Runyon threw a 35-yard dart to Michael Teale to drive
into Shoemaker's side of the field, leading to Runyon's
eventual sneak into the end zone for a score. Heights
attempted a 2 point conversion and failed, but still
managed to hang on until the end, winning by a final of
19-14. It won't be an easy road for Heights from here on
out as they have Temple next week followed by Ellison,
Bryan, and A&M Consolidated.
China Spring at LaVega (17-3A)
One game that proved to live up to the hype
generated on CentexFootball.com's Bulletin Board
was from 17-3A as LaVega paid China Spring a visit they
will not soon forget. In the beginning, it did not look
as if the Cougars were much of a match for LaVega as the
Pirates entered halftime with a 20-7 lead. But LaVega
let China Spring back in the game in the third and
fourth quarters as Cougar sophomore sensation Michael
Hicks led the China back into contention, scoring four
touchdowns in the second half. Only one touchdown
separated the two teams as China Spring had possession
with 10 seconds left in the game and LaVega led 40-34.
But China Spring would not let their comeback be
thwarted when they put together a scoring drive and
Hicks scored his fifth touchdown of the night on a pass
from China QB Dustin Eskew. The David George extra point
was good and the Pirates left China Spring with a
heart-breaking loss to the "comeback" Cougars. Final
score: 41-40 China Spring
Robinson at Connally (17-3A)
On many a predictor's scorecard the 17-3A game
between Robinson and Connally looked to be one of the
best matches of the Central Texas week 6 schedule.
However, the Rockets were quick to prove those foreseers
wrong when they scored three touchdowns on their first
three possessions. Robinson QB Randy Kitchens and WR B.J.
Lewis were a virtual circus show as they hooked up
throughout the game when the Rockets needed it. But
Robinson was also impressive defensively as they held
the normally tactful Connally offense at bay, allowing
the Cadets only 110 yards of total offense. Robinson
also proved its defensive might when Michah Spicer
scored a touchdown after falling on a fumble in
Connally's own end zone in the third quarter.
"Impressive" is the best word to describe Robinson in
this surprising 35-7 blowout.
McGregor at Crawford (21-2A)
Another game of the week picked by
CentexFootball.com turned out to be somewhat of a
disappointment. The match between Crawford and McGregor
was seen as one of the key games for Week 6 as both
teams entered the game with a 4-1 record. McGregor could
not seem to stop the Pirates from the outset of this one
as Crawford pulled out all the stops, even scoring on a
"Statue of Liberty" play to take a 14-0 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs looked as though they might have a chance
at getting something started when Qualin Brown shot
through the Pirates' coverage and nearly ran back the
opening kickoff of the second half. But McGregor shot
themselves in the foot on that particular drive with a
15-yard personal foul from which they could not recover.
The rest of the game did not get any better for the
Bulldogs as Crawford ended up blanking McGregor with a
final score of 28-0.
Marlin at Riesel (22-2A)
A game that generated some of the most bulletin board
talk this season saw Marlin (who hasn't lost a game
since their season opener versus LaVega) going to Riesel
for a 22-2A battle. It seemed that Riesel may have just
been all talk as the Bulldogs romped the Indians,
gaining 325 rushing yards on the night. Marlin's ground
attack was led by running back Antonio Moore who
racked up 145 rushing yards and a touchdown. Riesel's
only legitimate score came in the second quarter on a
40-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Cope when the Indians
resorted to the old "I'm not sure what to do on this
play let me run to the sideline to ask my coach just
before the ball is snapped" routine. Riesel also scored
on Marlin's second and third team players in the fourth
quarter, but not before the Bulldogs put a hurting on
Riesel's scoreboard. The Bulldogs won in a big way,
54-14.

Week 2 Game Summary:
Marlin vs. Snyder
Marlin seemed to have
a case of the jitters or Snyder was really putting the
hits on the Bulldogs in the second game of the 2006
Gordon Wood Brownwood Classic.
Marlin won the toss and (as usual) deferred until the
second half. Snyder got the ball and moved down the ball
down the field and scored. Snyder 7 Marlin 0. After the
kick-off, the first play from scrimmage Snyder took the
ball from the Marlin back. Marlin's defense held, Snyder
tried a field goal and missed. Marlin got the ball back;
next play there was a fumble in the exchange and Snyder
wound up with the ball at the Marlin 1-yard line after
the ball is picked up by a Snyder defender. Two plays
later Snyder ran the ball in for a score. Snyder 14
Marlin 0. About five minutes into the game, Snyder
kicked the ball to Marlin, runner went up the middle the
ball is knocked loose; Snyder caught the ball on the run
and scores. Snyder was called off-sides on the kickoff
so the ball was brought back for another kick.
At this point, I was thinking to myself it was going to be
a long night for the Bulldogs and the Marlin faithful.
Finally, Marlin settled down. On the following series
Marlin could not move the ball, but at least held on to
it. After a couple of exchanges later Marlin got their
offense on track. Travis Miller scampered off the left
tackle and outran the Snyder defense for about 60 yards,
and walked the sideline before he was shoved out of
bounds. Marlin moves the ball down the field and scored.
Snyder 14 Marlin 6. Snyder jumped off-side on the extra
point try. Marlin decided to go for two. Pass over the
middle Dominque Jones out-jumped the defenders to make
the score Snyder 14 Marlin 8.
Marlin's defense gave ground against a very young Snyder
offense similar in makeup to Marlin's offense, senior
line and junior and sophomore backfields. Marlin held
Snyder scoreless for the second quarter until the
offense got
back on track. Marlin opened up their passing attack and
moved down the field to score their second touch down on
a five yard pass to Coryell Judie. Marlin 15 Snyder 14.
Halftime comes up as Marlin's defense continued to hold the
Tigers scoreless.
Third quarter, Marlin's offense got some consistency and
kept the defense off the field. Marlin scored again on a
run play by Antonio Moore from about 20 yards out. Extra
point was good. Marlin 22 Snyder 14.
Fourth quarter. The Bulldog defense held as Snyder moved down
to the Marlin 15. The Snyder quarterback went back for a
pass with 1:53 left on the clock. The Marlin defense
chased him back as he looked for a receiver as about
four Bulldogs tried to grab him as he attempted to throw.
35-yards later the Snyder quarterback was
dropped for a loss around the 50-yard line. The defense
held and Marlin went into the victory formation for the
win. Final Score: Marlin 22 Snyder 14.

Austin Westlake Player
Collapses During Game |

On Friday night the A&M Consolidated versus Austin Westlake game was stopped shortin the second quarter when 6’11, 315 pound Austin Westlake offensive tackle (who recently committed to the University of Texas) Matt Nader, fell backward off a sideline bench.
Nader's parents, who are both doctors, rushed from the stands to discover their son’s heart had stopped beating and immediately performed CPR. A few moments later, when a pulse was still undetected a defibrillator was used and Nader reportedly came to as he was carted away on an ambulance.
Nader was reportedly responsive and talking at College Station Medical Center within an hour of his collapse in College Station, where the game was played.
Nader has no history of heart conditions, and the cause of the incident is still unknown. He does not remember anything of the sudden attack, but was reportedly more concerned about the thought of letting his teammates down than about himself.
After Nader left the stadium in an ambulance, Westlake coach Derek Long huddled with players on the sideline where they decided not to continue the game between two top ten ranked teams in Texas class 5-A. The game ended in a tie 7 to 7.
Long said later, "A human life is much more important than a football game."

Nader collapsed Friday against A&M Consolidated
